Examinations for Certification of Greek Language in Cyprus

In Cyprus, there are two types of certification exams in Greek language-
  • Very Good knowledge of Greek Language
  • Basic knowledge of Greek Language for immigrants and Foreigners
The Directorate of Higher Education-Examination Office conducts and manages the Certification exam in basic knowledge of Greek language and very good knowledge of Greek Language.

Certifications Examination Very Good knowledge of Greek Language

Candidates who have studied in the Greek public secondary school are required to undertake this exam in order to prove their level of command in Greek language. This exam indicates “Certificate of Success in Very Good Knowledge of Greek Language”.

The exam determined the candidates’ ability to use the Greek language in written or spoken form spontaneously and fluently. This exam corresponds to level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Council of Europe. 

Structure of Exam

The exam has four parts:
  • Writing - Written part
  • Grammatical exercises - Written part: This part comprises of grammatical structure and syntactic. 
  • Oral Exam
  • Reading and reading comprehension - Written part

Applying Ways and Means

Candidates must fill out a form for the certification exam. To get the forms of the exam, click here, or the forms can also be collected from the examination office or district education offices. 

Examination Fees 

The examination fees are determined by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC). The fee is:
  • For written exam: €25,00
  • For the oral exam: €25,00 

Results

A score of 50 percent is needed in both written and oral examination. A certificate of success is provided to candidates who pass the exams.

Certification Examination Basic knowledge of Greek Language for Immigrants and Foreigners

This exam corresponds to level A2 of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This exam indicates that the candidate can communicate in Greek language for simple and day-to-day activities or tasks, understand expressions of daily use, like basic personal and other related information, employment, shopping etc.

The basic knowledge of Greek language exam is held two times in a year. 

This exam tests the basic knowledge of Greek language of foreigners and immigrants living in Cyprus as per the Law 143(I) of 2009 amending the Aliens and immigration.

Exam Structure

Section A: Reading and Comprehension 

Section B: Writing 

This section assesses the knowledge of fundamental elements of contemporary social and political reality of Cyprus.

Section C: Listening and Understanding Essay

This section comprises of 4 subjects. In this section, daily dialogues or other texts like brief discussions, presentation etc is played twice. Candidates are required to listen to them and answer questions accordingly.  

Section A, B and C
  • Total duration: 3 hours
Section D: Oral Examination

This examination consists of 3 parts and the duration of this section is 10-15 minutes.:
  • Personal information
  • Short debate on an item, such as purchase, doctor visit etc.
  • Conversation with the examiners on simple day-to-day matters

Examination Fees 

The examination fee is €25,00

Scoring and Results

Candidates must obtain a total score of at least 50% in the oral test and at least 40% in each section of the exam.  A certificate of success is provided to candidates who score at least 50 percent.

Exams Greek Typewriting and Shorthand

The Directorate of Higher Education-Examination Office conducts the Greek Typewriting and Shorthand examination.  This exam is held three times in a year in the months of May, June and November.

This exam tests the typing and writing speed (shorthand) in the Greek language.  The exam is conducted at three levels: lower, middle and higher level. 

Candidates who pass this exam are given success certificate that enables them to apply in public as well as private sector. 

Eligibility

Nationals of Cyprus aged 16 and above are eligible to sit for typewriting and shorthand exam.  

Applying Ways and Means

Candidates must fill out a form for the certification exam. Forms can  be collected from the examination office or district education offices, or from the Ministry of Education-Exam Service website

Examination Fees 

The examination fee is determined by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus. The fee is €34,00 for each exam level. 

Scoring and Results 

Typing

For Lower level: 
The part A must not go beyond 8 errors and part B must have a score of at least 60 percent
Success with distinction is given if the candidate does not make more than 3 mistakes in part A and scores at least 80 percent in part B.

For Medium and Higher level:
A score of at least 60 percent is needed in part B.
Success with distinction is given on the score of 80 percent with at least an individual score of 65 percent.

Shorthand
Candidates who do not make errors beyond 4 percent of the words dictated are considered successful. Success with distinction is given to candidates whose errors are less than one-third of the 4 percent of the number of words dictated.
